The Coriolis Effect.

Article by Jasmin Chong.

Photographs by Kelly Irvine.

Taking current affairs into account and the current disasters happening around us like the Tibetan earthquake. Situations like that affect and influence us in many different ways is a big influence on Kooky Studios work, whether it be emotionally or creatively. Researching into the earthquakes and looking at the deeper meaning, including the Maya calendar and the pole shift effect and how it effects the earth. Taking inspiration from many different things even if the things are world disasters, it’s good to look at all aspects of inspiration.

amy

Here at Kooky Studios, we took inspiration from the natural disasters and created some images based on the idea of the coriolis effect. The corolis effect is inspired by our research into the Pole Shift Hypothesis. The Pole Shift Hypothesis is a theory that suggests there has been rapid shifts in the positions of geographic locations of the poles and rotation of the earth, which are said to be the cause of the earths natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. This led us to create imagery in a style that represents the ‘coriolis effect’, with windswept elements.

Stepping Stones

Sam and Alan were married at Hipping Hall, and Kooky Studios were there to document their day.

Hipping Hall takes its name from the hipping, or stepping stones, that crossed the Broken Beck, a stream passing the hall. Travellers who crossed the stream, on journeys from the West Coast of England to Northern cities, used these stepping stones to get across. The hall dates back to the 15th Century when it was the home of the Tathams, a family of blacksmiths, who assisted those travelling the route from Cumbria to Yorkshire. Nowadays the Hall is a five star hotel and makes for an idyllic wedding destination for any couple.

The garden’s greenery makes for a picturesque location, and the remote location, tucked between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, means guests will be transported back in time for a magical fairytale wedding. Hipping Hall can provide guidance and planning for weddings however prides itself on allowing brides and grooms to cater every aspect of their wedding exactly to their needs.

The Quay Hotel

On Good Friday Carl and Erin became Mr & Mrs O Gorman in a beautiful ceremony, captured by Kooky Studios. If a fairytale wedding with castle views sounds like the ceremony of your dreams, look no further than the Quay Hotel & Spa. The venue on the waterside backdrop  of Conwy castle in North Wales proved the perfect location for the happy couple, who said “I do” in front of family and friends in a romantic ceremony.

The hotel offers a wide range of wedding packages, to ensure the bride and groom get a special day, tailored to them. The packages range from hen party preparations and honeymoon breaks, as well as an extensive menu of decadent food and drink, with optional extras such as canapés and bride and groom packages. Carl and Erin’s special day carried on into the early hours, where guests ate, drank and danced the night away with the happy couple.

Interning at Kooky Studios

1779790_10202599218135974_390172124_n

It was my first day interning at Kooky studios on Wednesday, my name is Jasmin Chong and I’m currently in my 2nd year of Fashion communication at Liverpool John Moores. I’m originally from Manchester and have been living and learning in Liverpool for the past 2 years. My main interests lie in photography and art, So the internship at Kooky Studios was perfect for me, as Kelly’s work is really interesting and her style is really inspiring. Especially her digitalised photographs that have been featured on her Saatchi Art Portfolio that you can buy on the website. My first task was to look into the exhibition that was downstairs in the Baltic Social. The exhibition was called Knack and was curated by 90 Squared, who are located on the second floor of the elevator studios, an exhibition for up and coming artists to showcase their work. Kelly’s work is also featured on the walls, amongst other artists. I researched the exhibition and took photos of the exhibition. I was also asked to research Silver Birch to get some background information on the brand and Sarah Birch herself. I think Kooky Studios is in the perfect area for creativity, and i think it will definitely benefit me as a person and help me grow, creativity wise.

I’m looking forward to my rest of the time at Kooky Studios and excited to be a part of the Kooky team.

The GIT award, founded by Liverpool music blog ‘GetIntoThis’, was created as a way to celebrate the best of new Merseyside based music. Each year, 12 artists are selected that best represent the success of the growing music scene in Liverpool.

This year, the GIT awards are to be held at the Kazimier on Saturday 4th April.

Among this years nominee’s includes The Sundowners, a band with whom we’ve worked closely with on a number of projects. Read about our work with The Sundowners here and here.

Click here to take a look at the video shot and edited by Kelly at Kooky Studios of the Sundowners at their album launch gig.

The Sundowners recently spoke to GetIntoThis about their nomination, and the journey that led them to where they are now.

We were at practice just last night going over old tunes which were great at the time. But we were laughing about them, they just seemed so naive, and if that was out there on a record you wouldn’t be able to take that back. I’m glad we’ve evolved and got to where we are now, and the stuff that we’re putting out is the first record and is what we’ll be known for forever,”- Fiona Skelly on the bands growth.

There’s so many good bands. What I like about Liverpool bands is that no one gives up, they just keep going. There’s a strong scene and a strong connection between all the bands.” – Niamh on the passion of the Merseyside music scene.

You can read the full interview here.

Doors open at 7.00 at the Kazimier on Saturday, so don’t miss out on a chance to celebrate the talent that Merseyside has to offer!

Alexander McQueen – Savage Beauty

Article and photographs by Amy Jackson

"I want to be the purveyor of a certain silhouette or a way of cutting, so that when I'm dead and gone people will know that the twenty-first century was started by Alexander McQueen."
“I want to be the purveyor of a certain silhouette or a way of cutting, so that when I’m dead and gone people will know that the twenty-first century was started by Alexander McQueen.”

In one of our recent posts about Kooky Studios’ new fashion film, we referenced Kelly’s love of the work of influential fashion photographer Nick Knight. Nick Knight worked closely over the years with fashion designer Alexander McQueen, before his untimely death in 2010. I recently had the chance to visit the Alexander McQueen exhibition ‘Savage Beauty’ held in the V&A in London, and thought I’d provide readers of the blog with an insight into the exhibition.

Alexander McQueen A/W 2010.
Alexander McQueen A/W 2010.

Upon entering the first room, an array of the designers garments were showcased on mannequins, with a large screen showing clips from past catwalk shows. Whilst admiring some of McQueen’s most influential work, such as garments from his controversial 1995 collection ‘highland rape’, eery background music was paired with quotes about the designer. The whole atmosphere of the exhibition was moving and layered with nostalgia, with each room portraying a different stage in McQueen’s career. My favourite room in the exhibition consisted of television screens showing various catwalk shows, paired with selected garments from the designer. In the center of the room was the memorable dress from the designers SS 1999 catwalk show, where supermodel Shalom Harlow wore a plain white strapless dress in which mechanical robots spray painted right before the audiences eyes, creating an iconic moment in fashion history. Watch the moment here.

The exhibition ended with the designers last completed collection, from SS 2010, featuring unforgettable garments such as the surreal ‘Armadillo Shoe’, as modelled by Lady Gaga in the Bad Romance music video.

One of a kind..

Kooky Studios has been working closely with the Merseyside based band the Sundowners. We recently did a shoot with the Sundowners in collaboration with the national hairdressing brand, Electric Hair (read about the shoot and our fashion film here and here). Some of the accessories included in the shoot are from Niamh Rowe’s etsy page, IntoTheLightVintage. IntoTheLightVintage opened at the start of this year, and is made up of beautiful handmade jewellery such as feathered earrings and necklaces, with a distinctly bohemian feel. The store also stocks selected vintage garments; at the moment there’s a pair of vintage flared levi jeans, perfectly fitting with the 70’s trend we’ve been seeing lately! Jewellery ranges from £7.50 to £25.00, a bargain for such one of a kind pieces.

Along with Niamh, Fiona Skelly , another member of the Sundowners also has her own etsy shop, named ShikobaSpirit, supplying more bohemian handmade accessories. One of the most impressive items stocked is a 6ft handmade dream-catcher made with sari silk, crystals, beads and feathers.
